Giant’s Causeway suffers tailbacks

Giant's Causeway, in County Antrim

The Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s only World Heritage Site, has been inundated with tailbacks and car-parking chaos — and all before the busy season even kicks in.

The National Trust, which is undertaking a major £18.5m project to build a new visitor centre at the site, has advised visitors to prepare for a major knock-on effect on drivers, saying it is already experiencing a high volume of traffic disruption in the low season.

Ali Walker, site manager, said: “The builder, Gilbert Ash, is making excellent progress on the project with the foundations and the ground slab now in place.

“With this intense progress there are some difficult management issues to resolve which will have a continuing impact on members and visitors. While the site is open for business, it is definitely not business as usual.

“We have some car parking at the Causeway — however, the number of spaces available during the build are very limited. The trust is anticipating major pressure at the car parks, as well as on the immediate roads around the Causeway.

“Those visiting the Causeway during the year ahead are urged to use park & ride facilities from nearby Bushmills. The service is free to National Trust members.

“A charge of £1.75 return applies to non-members. The service operates every 15 minutes to and from the Giant’s Causeway during the main visitor season.”
