Fire crews have battled with a gorse blaze which broke out on the sand dunes at a golf course in Portrush.

According to fire service group commander, Mark McGranaghan, the blaze took hold after 4pm on Saturday at the Curran Strand in Portrush.

He said the fire covered an area of up to 300 metres and praised the quick thinking of lifeguards on patrol who had raised the alarm.

"It was brought under control around an hour later," he said.

"The quick thinking of the lifeguards helped to make sure it didn't spread onto the golf course or residential areas."

The cause of the blaze has not been established.
