Health trust faces fall proceedings

Medical negligence proceedings are to be taken against a health trust after a man fell to his death from a hospital window in north Belfast

Medical negligence proceedings are to be taken against a health trust after a man fell to his death from a hospital window in north Belfast, a lawyer for his family has confirmed.

An independent psychiatric report is to be obtained by Belfast Coroner's Court after Christopher Boyle, 44, plunged from the Mater Hospital just before Christmas in 2008. He suffered severe brain and lung injuries.

A preliminary hearing of his inquest in Belfast learned a case was to be taken for medical negligence, although that has not yet been submitted to the Belfast Health Trust.

The lawyer for the family, Fiona Sterritt, said the civil action was still in the preliminary stages but a writ would be issued against the trust.

Psychiatrist Dr Helen Harbinson has been asked by coroner Joanne Donnelly to draw up a report on the patient but it is unclear how long that will take.

Statements have been sought from patients who occupied the same ward as Mr Boyle, who lived at a flat on the Cliftonville Road, Belfast.
