One of Northern Ireland's Olympic greats ran in the closing stages of the Belfast relay and dedicated it to her old coach.

Dame Mary Peters, 72, who lives on the outskirts of Belfast, ran, jumped and threw her way into the record books to win gold in the pentathlon - setting a world record points total during the 1972 Munich Games.

Her success was one of few bright spots during a year when the Troubles and conflict were at their worst and the prodigious talent had to brave dangerous streets to go to training.

Her coach Buster McShane, from East Belfast, died six months after she won gold.

She said: "It was emotional for me. I have happy memories of the hard work he put me through.

"I felt as if I was running down the roads he walked through and paying tribute to him."

Dame Mary is still involved with sport through the Mary Peters Trust, which helps young people in Northern Ireland achieve excellence in their fields. She also has a ceremonial role welcoming prominent visitors including members of the Royal Family to the city.

She praised the hundreds who came to Belfast City Hall for the evening celebration.

She said: "It was amazing, the warmth from the crowd, the flame just burst a bubble of warmth through Royal Avenue and here in the city hall."

She said she hoped the many children in the audience who saw the flaming cauldron being lit on stage would want to pursue sport when they grow up.

She added that it was a chance for the people of Northern Ireland to get the feeling of what the Olympics was all about.

"Bringing the youth of the world together in peace and harmony," she said.

The cauldron was lit by final runner Laura McCann, 28, a PE teacher at St Dominic's school in West Belfast.

She said: "It was amazing, there will never be anything that I will do that will be as big a day.

"It means everything and shows me how much I need to keep motivated and continue to motivate."

Belfast's lord mayor Gavin Robinson said people were enthralled by the relay, adding that he admired the hope, inspiration and aspiration he had seen.

He said: "I am delighted that people from right across Belfast have had the opportunity to take part and be a torchbearer... and everyone who has lined the road.

"People have been incredibly energised by the torch and the forthcoming Games.

"I hope it is going to continue. If the Games play their part in energising people to get involved in sport and get active, then that will be a legacy that lives on in Belfast."
