Guests dressed in 1920s glamour attended the premieres of The Great Gatsby in Belfast and Dublin - the same night the film opened Cannes Film Festival.

While stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire walked the red carpet in France, flapper fever took over Belfast's Odeon.

Venues in the city are playing homage to the decadent 1920s this month, with Bert's Jazz Bar and Stiff Kitten putting on themed nights.

Critics who have praised the adaptation, have said it was “unmistakably F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby” and it was “the best attempt to capture the essence of the novel”.

DiCaprio has said he was “fascinated” by Gatsby as a character. “I was moved by him. It no longer became a love story to me it became a tragedy” about a man trying to become “the new Rockefeller and along the way had lost the sense of who he was.”
