A Londonderry man struck another with a bottle, causing him a serious head injury that required stitches, because he believed he was about to be attacked himself, a court has heard.
John Paul Barr (22), of The Meadows, appeared at the city’s Magistrates Court yesterday, where he admitted assaulting the man on September 13 last year.
The court heard there was a verbal altercation inside a bar between Barr and the injured party. Outside, the injured party |approached again and Barr struck him on the head with a bottle.
A defence solicitor said that Barr believed that he was going to be attacked.
Deputy District Judge Brian Archer said that it was “fortunate” that Barr was not facing more serious charges.
Barr was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for a period of two years, and ordered to pay £600 in compensation.
