Johnny Howard: 'Rasputin the Mad Monk' wrestler dies

The death has occurred of Irish former professional wrestler Johnny Howard, known professionally as 'Rasputin -- The Mad Monk'.

He became a household name to wrestling and sports fans throughout the UK and Ireland due to his regular TV appearances in ITV 'World of Sport' wrestling bouts during the 1970s and 1980s.

ITV ceased its wrestling coverage in 1988 after which he wrestled professionally all over continental Europe as well as the UK and Ireland until his retirement in the early 1990's.

A native of Athy, Co Kildare, Mr Howard spent much of his childhood in England before returning to Ireland to live in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, in the early 1960s.

He died peacefully in Loughbrickland, Co Down, yesterday.
