Three media organisations including the Belfast Telegraph have successfully challenged a reporting restriction in the Bertie Acheson manslaughter case.

The Coleraine pensioner died after he was confronted by an intruder in his home last April.

A ban was placed on identifying one of the accused, Jennifer Toland (23), who is on bail.

Yesterday District Judge Des Perry heard representations from the media. Barrister Frances Lynch argued potential threats to the accused could not be taken into consideration under the Contempt of Court Act 1981.

Defence counsel Aaron Thompson said Mrs Toland had moved to a new area and if she was known there she could be vulnerable.

Lifting the ban, Mr Perry said he "would be disappointed" if a responsible media was to publish details of where she was living.
