The brother of Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams is to stand trial accused of a catalogue of sex offences, a judge has ruled.

Liam Adams faces a total of 18 counts, including rape, gross indecency and indecent assault.

The charges relate to the alleged abuse of his daughter Aine Tyrell, who has waived her right to anonymity.

Adams (56), originally from west Belfast, denies all claims that have been made against him.

The allegations were reported when Ms Tyrell took part in a television documentary in 2009.

He was extradited to Northern Ireland earlier this month after losing a legal battle which, if successful, would have allowed him to remain in the Republic. Adams |appeared in the dock yesterday dressed in a suit for preliminary inquiry proceedings at Belfast Magistrates Court.

A district judge granted a prosecution application for the case to progress to the next stage.

She returned the accused for trial at the Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Adams was remanded back into custody until |that hearing gets underway.
