Machete bank robber jailed for seven years

A 'scumbag' who held a machete to a customer's throat during a bank robbery has been jailed for seven years.

Belfast Crown Court heard that 29-year-old Brian McKeown walked into the Northern Bank on Victoria Street on April 7, 2009 with his face unmasked. As he approached the cashier, however, he pulled a hood and scarf over his face.

Prosecuting lawyer David McAllister said McKeown pulled a 12-inch knife from his jumper and shouted at the cashier to fill a bag with money. As she did so, McKeown pointed the machete at a male customer and threatened to "cut his ear off".

McKeown was arrested on June 8, 2010 after leaving DNA evidence at the scene.

During interviews, McKeown, from Woodside View in the Poleglass area of west Belfast, initially denied the robbery but when the evidence was put to him, he confessed, telling police "how much of a scumbag is that?"

He later pleaded guilty to offences of robbery and common assault.
