Fire crews are at the scene of major blaze at a former secondary school in Co Londonderry.

The fire broke out at the disused St Peter's High School in the Creggan area a short time ago.

Extensive damage has been caused to the property.

In a statement the PSNI urged residents living nearby to stay inside due to the amount of smoke being generated.

In July a local councillor said the school which closed recently should be knocked down after it was targeted by arsonists.
