A major search in the Republic for a third Northern Ireland man who was reported missing in a boat has ended for the evening.

Three men went missing on Lough Ree in the river Shannon, close to Athlone, on Thursday evening.

Two men were later recovered and taken to Hodson Bay

One is reported to be suffering from hypothermia while the other is said to be in a serious condition.

The whereabouts of the third man has not yet been determined.

It is believed that the three men are from Northern Ireland, and that they intended to stay on an island in Lough Ree.

Locals reported that conditions on the lake were quite poor for most of the day.

Gardai and the RNLI Lough Ree lifeboat are taking part in the search.

The men are not thought to be from the Athlone area.
