A 71-year-old man has been charged with escaping from custody in 1974

A man arrested in connection with a murder in Belfast 38 years ago has been charged with escaping from custody.

The 71-year-old will also be reported to prosecutors in relation to the murder of Ellen McDowell and a number of other offences.

He was detained in Newtownards, Co Down, on Monday and interviewed by police about the shooting of the 21-year-old in 1974.

She was shot in the head as she walked with her boyfriend in the city's Shankill area on April 6, 1974.

The arrested man has been charged with escaping from lawful custody in May 1974. He is due to appear in court in Belfast.

Ms McDowell, from Glenvarna Drive, Glengormley, Co Antrim, had just left a club when a car pulled up at the corner of Loftus Street and Beresford Street, and a single shot was fired.
