Man denies stabbing brother in row over washing dishes

A man has been charged with stabbing his brother in the leg with a knife during a row over washing dishes.

Stephen Thomas Donaghy (40), from Main Street in Dungiven, Co Londonderry, denies wounding his brother Christopher with intent and possessing a knife.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in their father's home on the same street on Saturday night.

Applying for bail at the Magistrate's Court in Derry yesterday, defence solicitor Paddy McDaid said there was a history of violence between the brothers and his client lived in fear of his sibling.

Mr McDaid said the row broke out when dishes were being washed in the kitchen and the defendant was thrown to the ground and kicked by his brother. He said the defendant acted in self defence and that cutlery and dishes were thrown around.

The judge adjourned the bail application until next Monday to enable the defendant to obtain a suitable bail address. The defendant was remanded in custody.
