Man facing prison after break-in at pensioner's home

A judge has told a 24-year-old father-of-three, whose girlfriend is pregnant with their fourth child, that he's going to jail for trespassing at the home of an 84-year-old woman.

Shane McAnenny, of Dervock Place in Londonderry’s Waterside area, pleaded guilty at the city's Crown Court to committing the offence on June 10 of last year.

He had 17 other previous convictions.

A prosecution barrister told Judge Piers Grant that the elderly woman was awoken “by someone trying to take her watch from her wrist when she was asleep in her bedroom” during the raid on her home in June 2010.

The woman shouted at the intruder who ran off.

When the police were called to her home they found the kitchen window had been forced open.

McAnenny was arrested after his fingerprints were found on the window frame.

Following the fingerprint match McAnenny was arrested, and alleged two other men had been involved.

He was detained in April this year after police forced their way into his home and found him hiding.

McAnenny was said to have returned to the city after spending six months living across the border in Donegal.

The barrister said that several rooms in the woman's house had been ransacked and a number of items were missing, including an antique jar that was more than 100 years old and belonged to her mother.

A gold chain, car keys and her purse with around £15 in cash were also stolen. None of the items was recovered.

McAnenny denied being in the victim's bedroom or attempting to take the victim's watch, claiming to have left as soon as he realised an elderly woman lived there.

Judge Grant said he was adjourning sentencing until after a burglary charge against the defendant is contested at the Magistrates Court.

However, he told McAnenny that “there will be a custodial offence for this irrespective of the outcome of the Magistrates Court hearing”.

McAnenny was remanded in custody pending sentencing.
