An outspoken judge has expressed his exasperation at those who prevent the emergency services getting to people whose lives are in danger.
District Judge Barney McElholm was speaking after fining a man £400. He had pleaded guilty to verbally abusing fire officers. Paul Daniel Crossan from the Waterside area of Londonderry admitted being abusive to police and fire officers when he and other residents were evacuated from a block of flats after someone had discharged a gas canister.
The court was told that Crossan ignored several requests by police and fire officers to stop verbally abusing them during the incident.
After his arrest for disorderly behaviour, cannabis resin was found on Crossan, a machine operator from Dormans Court. He was fined £400 after his admission at Derry Magistrates Court.
Mr McElholm said: “I don’t understand the attitude of people who obstruct members of the emergency services while they are dealing with incidents.”
