The 31-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after the attack on a woman (26) on the Ormeau Road at around 1.50am.
The victim was hit on her eye area. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Police have appealed for witnesses.
