Police are treating as attempted murder a petrol bomb attack which left a Co Londonderry man seriously injured.

The 45-year-old victim is being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for 35% burns including injuries to his face and neck. His condition has been described as serious but stable.

He had been in the living room of his home at Ben Varden Avenue in the Waterside area of Derry when two male youths smashed the window and threw a lit petrol bomb directly towards him.

The attack happened at about 11.10pm on Friday.

The man had to be rescued by two neighbours.

PSNI Inspector Jon Burrows, area commander in Foyle said he was lucky to be alive.

"He was pulled from the property by two neighbours who risked their own lives. Contrast that with the actions of the two cowards who threw the petrol bomb. But, for the actions of those neighbours this man could possibly have died," said Inspector Burrows.

The two suspects who were dressed in grey hooded tops and used scarves to cover their faces made off on foot in the direction of Dervock Place.

Inspector Burrows said police were still working to establish a motive and urged anyone with information to come forward.

"We would appeal to anyone who has information that could help our investigation to speak to us," said the senior officer.
