A Co Antrim man was convicted at Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday for importing and supplying illegal medicines without a licence.
William Devenney (42), from Bluefield Close, Carrickfergus, received an 18-month conditional discharge, plus costs, having pleaded guilty to charges of importing and supplying unlicensed medicinal products.
The unlicensed products, branded as ‘Super Numb’ and ‘Xylocaine’ contained prilocaine, lidocaine and tetracaine and were not authorised to be imported or sold in the UK.
On February 7, the UK Border Agency intercepted almost 500 tubes of the topical anaesthetic cream destined for Devenney’s address. During a follow-up search a further 500 tubes of the cream were found.
The Medicines Regulatory Group found Devenney sourced the medicines in the Far East and had been dealing in the unlicensed products via the internet for almost a year.
