A young man is recovering after a mob set his car ablaze and assaulted him.

Detectives said about 15 men set upon the 19-year-old man's car in the Milltown Road area of Belfast shortly after 8pm on Friday night.

Shouting at him to get out of the car, they started to smash it up and pour petrol over it.

The mob then set the car alight and the young man was attacked with what he believes were hammers and baseball bats.

Investigators said he suffered injuries to his head and shoulders before managing to run off.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A second vehicle close to the burning car was also ignited during the incident.

Police in Castlereagh have appealed for anyone who witnessed the attack to contact them.
