Man's lucky escape in gun attack

A man is lucky to be alive after escaping serious injury when a shot was fired into the front room of a house.

The victim, understood to be an eastern European, was in the property at Drumalane Park, Newry, when the gunman struck.

The 48-year-old was sitting in the front room along with his partner at around 11.15pm on Saturday when a single shot was fired through the window. Police described the injuries he sustained to his neck and arm as “very minor”.

A PSNI spokesman said it is still working to establish a motive for the attack.

Mayor of Newry John McArdle hit out at the gunmen.

“For someone to be sitting in their home on a Saturday night and to have a shot fired through is a terrifying ordeal,” he said.

“This type of activity has to be condemned.”

Mr McArdle, an SDLP councillor, appealed for the public to assist police with their investigation.

Police want to speak to the driver of a blue and silver Mitsubishi four-wheel drive seen in the area at the time of the shooting.
