Mourne Park, Kilkeel, Co. Down

Golfer Rory McIlroy's luxury home in Northern Ireland is up for sale with a £2 million asking price.

It is situated at Moneyreagh in the hills above Belfast and the five bedroom property includes a practice area with a putting green and driving range. There is also a gymnasium in an adjoining refurbished stone barn.

McIlroy once shared the house with girlfriend Holly Sweeney before the relationship ended in 2011. He now shares his life with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

Michael Rodgers, a partner at Rodgers & Brown, the Holywood, Co Down, firm of estate agents which is handling the sale, said: "I would say interest in the house will be extremely good, both locally and potentially worldwide. We will have to wait and see."

The house, which is set in 14 acres, was built in 2006.

McIlroy, now the world's number one golfer, purchased it in 2009, but now spends most of his time overseas, especially in the United States where he is due to tee up at East Lake, Atlanta, for the start of the final FedEx Cup play-off which carries a 10 million US dollars bonus on top of the 1.44 million US dollars first prize.

The owner's perspective in the sale brochure reads: "I have really enjoyed living here. It is a really special place which has allowed me to relax and unwind - when I get time! With the privacy and seclusion of the location it is hard to believe the house is only 25 minutes from Belfast city centre and City airport.

"The space the house offers is bright and airy and there are views over the gardens and the pond from most rooms. The house has always been busy with friends and family and has suited us on all occasions."

The sale will heighten speculation that McIlroy will now seek to live abroad permanently, possibly Florida - especially after he caused public controversy in Northern Ireland and the Republic earlier this month when he indicated he would play golf for Team GB in the 2016 Rio Olympics. He has now put that decision on hold.

Mr Rodgers said: "Rory still has property interests in Northern Ireland. His mum and dad still live here."
