MLA calls for Foyle Ferry Service funding

An Assembly member wants Stormont to fund the Foyle Ferry Service out of the public purse.

Officials are to be questioned by the Regional Development Committee at Stormont about why the Strangford Ferry Service receives funding from government, but not Foyle’s.

The Foyle Ferry operates between Magilligan and Greencastle in the Irish Republic, bringing thousands of tourists to both areas every year.

It recently celebrated it's two millionth passenger — but the economic downturn means it’s running at a loss.

About the lack of funding, SDLP’s John Dallat said: “The Foyle Ferry is vital to ensure tourists have the opportunity to visit both the North and South. It is time this matter was addressed and my only regret is that it has not been dealt with sooner.”
