Police have warned of the dangers of finding unusual items on the coast after a young boy found and picked up a live Second World War mortar.
The youngster was walking on the shoreline at Magilligan, Co Londonderry, when he discovered the lethal shell.
Police said a number of the shells have been recovered from the beach and in recent months.
Officers said the young boy lifted the mortar and is lucky not to have been badly injured.
Army technical officers attended the scene and disposed of the item, police said.
Anyone who discovers unusual items such as the old shell is being urged to contact police immediately.
