The mother of murdered teenager Thomas Devlin have praised a powerful new play about knife crime which will be performed in prisons in Northern Ireland.

A preview of The Long Road, which tells the story of an 18-year-old boy who dies from a stab wound, was shown yesterday in the Lyric Theatre.

Thomas' mother Penny Holloway said it would be good for those who have committed violence to see the impact on families.

“It was quite a powerful piece of drama,” she said. “We could certainly relate to the family in the play. It was an intense enough experience. I had read the script before so I knew what to expect, but Thomas' father hadn't and I think he found it quite powerful.”

Thomas (15) was stabbed in an unprovoked attack in north Belfast in August 2005 while returning home from the shop after buying sweets with friends. Mike Moloney, director of the Prison Arts Foundation, added: “This play could be the best rehab tool out there if support services are put in place for prisoners after they see it.”
