Nearly impossible to convict burglars, says senior police officer

A senior PSNI officer has admitted it is nearly impossible to put burglars behind bars unless they are caught in the act.

Chief Superintendent Alan Todd revealed that only 12.6% of burglaries result in a conviction, despite recent high-profile cases involving violence against the elderly including the death of 72-year-old Bertie Acheson in Coleraine.

Speaking in the Daily Mirror, Mr Todd said: “To get a detection for burglary, because of the rules of evidence, it’s almost necessary to catch a person on the premises.

“If they are subsequently caught, actually proving they were on the premises and just didn’t receive the goods by way of handling stolen property then that burglary remains uncleared.”
