It may be the holiday season for many, but Northern Ireland is facing a weekend of turbulent weather — as floods cause havoc for holidaymakers across the UK and Ireland.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for Northern Ireland which extended from this morning until midnight. Areas of Belfast, and counties Armagh and Down could be hit by 40mm to 80mms of rain.

Forecasters have also predicted persistent rain which could cause excessive surface water and rivers to burst their banks, triggering flooding.

Flash floods caused extensive damage in homes and schools across Belfast and outlying regions more than a week ago.

Meanwhile, three hours of heavy rainfall caused havoc in south Down on Thursday, flooding homes and blocking roads.

But Northern Ireland largely escaped the heavy rainfall which caused havoc in parts of the Republic and the UK yesterday. A month’s rain fell in parts of the UK yesterday. More than 120 flood alerts were in place in England and Wales.
