Oil tanks destroyed by arsonists

Detectives in Downpatrick are appealing for information following an arson attack in the Bracken Avenue area of Newcastle during the early hours of yesterday.

It was reported to police at approximately 3.20am that two oil tanks behind a block of flats had been deliberately set alight. The oil tanks were completely destroyed and scorch and smoke damage caused to the block of flats.

The flats were evacuated of residents for a time while the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service tackled the blaze. No one was injured during the incident.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information to contact detectives at Downpatrick CID on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their name, they can contact the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
