These are the hundreds of images submitted to the Belfast Telegraph’s One Summer’s Day photographic competition.

The winners are Matthew Humphreys (37) from Newtownabbey, who submitted a picturesque photograph of Cave Hill in Belfast; Ultan O’Callaghan (6) from Bessbrook, who took a moving picture of his brother and sister; and 13-year-old Katie Steele, for capturing a lively and atmospheric image at Whiterocks Beach.

Hundreds of keen photographers sent in their snaps to the judging panel of Belfast Telegraph Picture Editor Gerry FitzGerald, Ruth Burns from Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Michael Rafferty from Duffy Rafferty Communications.

Buzzing bees, bounding pets and stunning seaside views were among the wealth of pictures contributed by the army of budding snappers.

Competition entries were split into three categories — one for primary school children, one for secondary school children and a third category for everyone else.

The winners of each category will receive a family break in Northern Ireland and the top 100 pictures will be included in a |supplement given away free with this Wednesday’s Belfast Telegraph.

Ultan O’Callaghan took a beautiful picture of his brother Ryan (2) and five-year-old sister Aisling the day before Ryan — who has right ventricular cardiomyopathy — went into hospital for surgery.

Mum Martina said yesterday: “It is very dangerous for Ryan to go under anaesthetic so we always take a lot of photographs before he goes into hospital and we treasure all these moments.”

Ultan added: “I really like taking pictures of my family and was really happy when I heard I won.”

Mr Humphreys, who took the photograph of Cave Hill, said: “What makes Cave Hill so special is that it is a place to escape to for some peace and quiet.

“Little did I know when I took this picture that it would be a winning image. I’m still in complete shock! I just started getting more into photography in the last year.”

And Katie Steele said of her photograph of Whiterocks Beach: “The beach is very special to me as it is close to my house. I visit it almost every week and almost every day in the summer! It is an amazing place.”

Background

People across Northern Ireland were asked to help create a photographic time capsule of the season, for one day only. To take part, amateur photographers had to record what they were doing or seeing on Saturday, June 19. The result is a collection of photographs which give a snapshot of how the province looked on that one summer's day in 2010.
