A pensioner has been attacked with a hammer during a burglary at a house in Co Down.

The attack happened after a gang of three masked men - armed with hammers - broke into a house in the Crossgar Road area of Ballynahinch at around 11.30pm on Thursday.

A man, aged in his 70s, and a woman in her 60s were in the house at the time.

The male victim suffered injuries, after being struck with a hammer.

He was treated in hospital for injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

It's understood the thieves stole jewellery at around 1.30am before fleeing.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on the non-emergency number, 101.
