Darren saw off competition from all other UK-based photographers to net the award and its £3,000 prize money.
He succeeds The Mail on Sunday's Mark Pain, who won the inaugural award for coverage in 2011.
Chris Hornbuckle, Vauxhall head of sponsorship, said Darren's portfolio was the "stand-out winner" from a record number of entries.
Not only did Darren win the coveted Home Nations award, he made it an unprecedented hat-trick by also winning the Northern Ireland Photographer of the Year and Northern Ireland Individual Photograph of the Year awards.
