Police have said a pipe bomb found during a security alert in north Belfast may have been thrown at its officers.

The alert on Wednesday happened close to a business on the Whitewell Road.

Last night the pipe bomb was made safe and a number of homes evacuated for a time.

Police said the device may have been thrown at officers.

Meanwhile a security alert at a gym on the Shore Road in Newtownabbey has ended. Nothing untoward was found.

Dissident republicans have been blamed for recent pipe bomb attacks.

Last week similar devices were thrown at police patrols in Londonderry and Newtownabbey.

North Belfast councillor Patrick Convery condemned the perpetrators of the latest pipe bomb attack.

"Those responsible for throwing this pipe bomb were acting in a totally reckless manner," said the SDLP representative.

"They caused a great deal of inconvenience to people living in the Whitewell Road area.

"The fact that this was a viable device is extremely worrying and we are very fortunate that someone has not been injured or indeed worse.

"Those behind this security alert have nothing positive to offer our society. All they do is cause fear and disruption to the local community.

"I would urge anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward to the PSNI as soon as possible."
