A pipebomb has exploded at a house in Derry.

It went off in the Bonds Street area of the Waterside in the early hours of this morning, police have said.

Some 20 homes and a number of businesses have been evacuated as a result of the alert in the Clooney area of the city.

Diversions were put in place at the Glendermott Road and Dungiven Road junction.

Police said a motive for the incident is being investigated.

"We hope to have people back in their homes and businesses as soon as possible," said a spokesman.

Police are still waiting on a full report from army bomb experts in relation to the device.
