Police investigate gunshot reports

Police officers have appealed for information after shots were fired at a house in Newry

Police are investigating reports that shots were fired at a house in Newry.

Damage was caused to the windows of an unoccupied property at Crannard Gardens sometime overnight on Friday.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police are investigating claims that this damage was caused by shots being fired."

Any witnesses who may have information have been asked to contact detectives.

SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley said a group, purporting to be dissident republicans from South Down had claimed responsibility for the gun attack.

Mr Bradley said a recorded telephone message had been left at his constituency office in Newry.

"In this sinister message, this paramilitary group claims that it carried out a gun attack in Newry last evening," he said. "The group also claimed responsibility for two pipe bomb attacks, one in Bessbrook and the other in the Carnagat area of Newry.

"This type of violence was a frequent part of our past - it was wrong then and it is wrong now. The vast majority of our people rejected violence and continue to reject it. Violence cannot be legitimized regardless of whether or not a paramilitary group has a 'strategy'."

Mr Bradley urged anyone with information to contact the police.
