Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was stabbed to death in Co Antrim earlier today.

He died following an incident in the Stroanshesk Park area of Ballycastle.

The victim has been named as 25-year-old Kevin O'Neill.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested.

Ballycastle councillor Cara McShane said her thoughts were with the man's family.

"I was shocked to hear about the death of the young man earlier today," said the Sinn Fein representative.

"I would like to offer my sincere condolences to his family, who I know well.

"I would appeal to anyone with information on this incident to bring it immediately to the PSNI."

The murder is the second sudden death to hit the town in a number of days after a man was killed in a flat fire in the Diamond area on Friday afternoon.

Ms McShane added: "This is the second tragedy to face the town in days with the death of a man in a house fire on Friday and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these two men."

Meanwhile a 22-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a teenager in Magherafelt.

The 17-year-old male was stabbed in the incident in the Rainey Street area of the town in the early hours of Saturday.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The charged man also faces two counts of possession of an offensive weapon.

Elsewhere in Belfast a man has been arrested after a victim suffered facial injuries in a machete attack.

The 30-year-old victim was taken to hospital with what police described as a "large gash" to his face after the incident at a flat in Edlingham Street in the early hours.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.
