Policing Board chairman Barry Gilligan quizzed over land deal

Northern Ireland Policing Board chairman Barry Gilligan

Northern Ireland Policing Board chairman Barry Gilligan has been questioned by police in connection with a land deal in north Belfast.

Mr Gilligan went voluntarily to Antrim serious crime suite yesterday to talk to officers following searches carried out at his home and office last week.

Unspecified items were taken by detectives investigating the deal at Nelson Street involving his property company, Big Picture Developments.

In a statement last week, Mr Gilligan said he was confident that both he and the company would be vindicated.

He also vowed he would co-operate fully with the investigation.

Mr Gilligan had initially been expected back at his Policing Board desk this week after recovering from major heart surgery.

But, following raids on his house and office at the Board's headquarters, he suspended his return, saying he hoped to return “as soon as possible”.
