A prisoner has gouged his own eyes out and "mutilated" his testicles in Maghaberry Prison.

Sean Lynch, aged 23 and from Londonderry, has been left permanently blind after he inflicted the horrific injuries on himself while on remand at the high-security jail.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has called for an urgent review as he said Mr Lynch was supposed to be under enhanced supervision.

The man's father, Damian Lynch, said: “When he went into prison there was not a mark on him; when I got him back he was like something out of a Nazi death camp."

He said his son Sean was treated at Gransha Hospital after a series of incidents when he cut his wrists and throat, mutilated his testicles and finally gouged his own eyes out.

“There were clear signals that my son was not well and they were ignored by the prison staff and the hospital authorities," he told the Derry Journal.

Pat Ramsey has called on Justice Minister David Ford to investigate what he called a “shameful failure of the duty of care”.

“This young man has inflicted serious physical harm on himself in the care of Maghaberry Prison in recent days,” said Mr Ramsey. “I have asked the Justice Minister to conduct an urgent review into his case. What has been allowed to happen shows a shameful failure of the duty of care in this case.

“This is an extremely distressing case for this young man and for his loved ones, who I have spoken with. They, rightly, cannot understand how their son was able to inflict such horrific injuries on his body when he was meant to be, it is believed, under enhanced supervision. Something has gone badly wrong, and a thorough investigation must take place to ensure this never happens again.”

Mr Ramsey added: “I have written to David Ford and told him I am extremely concerned about this young man and for his family, and I have urged him to instigate an urgent case review as soon as possible.”
