Queen's team in quick exit on University Challenge

A team from Queen's University Belfast were trounced last night as they failed to make it through to the second round of University Challenge.

Niall McDonald from Lurgan, Joshua Greenwood from north Yorkshire, Thomas Haverty from Armagh, and Ronan Kernan from Downpatrick, were beaten on the BBC show by a team from the University of Newcastle.

The final score on the academic quiz hosted by Jeremy Paxman was 85-235.

Team captain Mr Haverty said: "Queen's haven't put a team forward for about six or seven years, so now they can build on what we have done.

"Jeremy was very nice. The whole persona is put on. He was very congenial. He said, 'Hard luck boys but at least the beer is calling.'"

At the end, Paxman told the men from Queen's they were "a very democratic team" but their downfall was spending "too long conferring".

The team had hoped to win in 2011 because it marks the 30th anniversary of the one and only time Queen's have won the championship.
