Rape accused unsure if he had sex with woman

A Portuguese man accused of rape has claimed he wasn't even sure if he'd had sex with his alleged victim.

Speaking through an interpreter, 28-year-old Tiago Sousa told the jury that although he tried to have sex with the woman, he was not sure if he actually did or not.

Sousa, with an address at Pembrook Court in Newtownabbey, denies raping the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on June 13 last year.

She gave evidence that she went with Sousa to La Gondola restaurant in Glengormley to use the phone there when she was allegedly raped. Once in the restaurant, Sousa described how they kissed before he carried her over to an area of the restaurant where there was a sofa.

When asked if the woman had at any time objected to anything that had happened, Sousa replied: "There as no objection... no indication that she didn't want it."

She did however, claimed Sousa, ask him to stop at one point so "I stopped immediately and got off her".

Sousa will continue giving his account to the court today.
