The disturbances that marred a loyalist parade in Belfast can never be allowed to happen again, a public meeting has heard.

Residents of the Carrick Hill estate near St Patrick’s church voiced serious concerns after bandsmen defied a ruling by the Parades Commission and played music as they passed the Catholic church in Donegall Street on Saturday.

More than 2,000 members of loyal orders and 100 bands are set to pass the church next month in a parade to mark the signing of the Ulster Covenant.

After last night’s meeting, Frank Dempsey from Carrick Hill Residents’ Association said loyalists should give the church the respect it deserves.

"I want to hear from the unionist politicians and loyal orders - give this community and this place of worship the respect they deserve. It's not a lot to ask," Mr Dempsey said.

"All we asked for from the very beginning was that the music was stopped at the Westlink, at the start of Carrickhill, and then recommenced at Union Street, and I think that way, everyone can get on with their lives."

Douglas Bain from the Parades Commission said: “I will take away to our colleagues a very strongly held view.”
