Safety fear sees Belfast bridge closed

A bridge used by cyclists and walkers in south Belfast has been closed off after its condition deteriorated.

The Clement Wilson bridge at New Forge Lane was fenced off by Belfast City Council as a safety measure.

“Unfortunately this means walkers and cyclists will no longer be able to use the bridge to travel between Belfast |and Lisburn,” a council |spokeswoman said. “Fencing has been erected to prevent access to the bridge.”

The council said it had already planned to replace the bridge, which has been in existence for more than 50 years, as part of a £150m investment programme.

It has applied for planning permission and will be writing to local residents to inform them of its proposals, it said.
