Scheme gets carrier bag levy boost

The Challenge Fund provides money for communities and organisations to take steps to improve the environment

A scheme to encourage new local environmental projects in Northern Ireland has been given £1 million from the carrier bag levy.

The Challenge Fund provides money for communities and organisations to take steps to improve the environment like restoring ancient woodland.

Environment minister Mark Durkan said: "This fund is about challenging and inspiring local communities to look at what they can do differently to improve the environment.

"It's about encouraging and supporting energetic partnerships between local businesses, schools, youth groups and residents; those who want to transform and shape their local environment for the better."
