DR James Hawthorne, former head of BBC Northern Ireland, died yesterday at the age of 74. He was controller in Belfast between 1979 and 1989 during some of the most difficult years of the Troubles, which included the IRA hunger strikes and violent loyalist protests over the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement.

Dr Hawthorne, who had been ill for sometime, died in hospital in Belfast. Anna Carragher, controller BBC Northern Ireland, said: "He had an enormous dedication and commitment to the BBC."
