A series of shocking images shows how bystanders tried valiantly to pull a hi-jacker from the car he had just stolen from a woman in Belfast.

The images show several people trying to pull the man from the white BMW car in the Corporation Street area of Belfast on Thursday morning.

Shortly before 9am a woman was approached by a man as she put money into a parking meter.

According to police, he then held a knife to her throat before taking her keys.

But as he tried to make off in the car, several people in the area close by tried to remove the hi-jacker from the vehicle.

However, despite their attempts, the car thief made off in the BMW.

Photographs of the theft were captured by a passer-by and broadcast on BBC Newsline on Thursday evening.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
