Indie singer Alex Trimble, who was plucked from relative obscurity for a prime role at the Olympics opening ceremony, thought the invitation to perform had been a dream.

Trimble, who fronts Northern Ireland's Two Door Cinema Club, sang specially commissioned piece Caliban's Dream as the flame passed through the stadium. He was accompanied by percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and soprano Esme Smith.

But Trimble said he found it hard to believe when he was approached for the role after being personally chosen by ceremony chief Danny Boyle.

He said: "I remember getting a call from my manager one morning while I was on tour in America. It woke me up and I was half asleep and hungover. He told me that Danny wanted me to come and perform a song at the Olympics.

"I listened and then went back to sleep. When I woke up again, I actually thought the call had been a dream. My manager called back and after a lot of convincing that it was, in fact, a real, genuine offer, I obviously said yes."

Trimble's band released their debut album, Tourist History, in 2010, going on to sell more than a million copies worldwide. His Olympic track was written by Underworld's Rick Smith.

Trimble said: "I'm really proud of the performance. I'm sure it'll take a few months for the reality to fully sink in."

Two Door Cinema Club's next album, Beacon, is due for release on September 3.
