Tears of child porn policeman

Ex-officer weeps in court after being jailed for having 603 vile images

A police officer who admitted downloading 603 indecent images of children from the internet has been told he will go to jail for the offences.

Brian Connor (46), from Clooney Road in Knockloughrim, Co Londonderry, wept in the dock at the Crown Court in Derry yesterday when Judge Piers Grant told him he would receive a custodial sentence.

Connor, a police officer for 26 years, was dismissed from the PSNI last year when he pleaded guilty to 27 specimen charges of downloading the indecent images.

He was remanded in custody following yesterday's plea and sentence hearing today.

Judge Grant said anyone caught downloading indecent images of children faced the inevitable consequence of going to jail.

“In any view, some of these images represent the most terrifying form of abuse for these children to undergo,” he said.

“The message must go out that the courts will strive where we can to protect innocent children who are not a voluntary part of the process of making these images.

“They are dragged into it and robbed of their childhood and of their innocence.

“These images are produced not for fun but for money, with the inevitable consequence that children will be abused and at times tortured and brutalised beyond belief.

“Anyone who engages in this sort of material is just as responsible for making the film as the person behind the camera”, he said.

Defence barrister Anthony Lunny said since he was arrested for the offences Connor, who was treated for depression following the breakdown of his marriage 13 years ago, had suffered widespread humiliation from within his community.

“He seems to have become a loner with no friends and he has been publicly shunned by his community,” he said.

“On the day he was released by the police after questioning for these offences he tried to commit suicide.

“The consequences for him and for his family have been devastating,” he said.
