Three Irish aces in European Ryder Cup line-up

Ireland will be well represented in this year’s Ryder Cup team with three Emerald Isle golfing aces on the team.

Last night European captain Colin Montgomerie confirmed the final line-up for the 2010 challengers and selected Irishman Padraig Harrington as one of his wildcard entries.

Northern Irish golfers Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy automatically qualified for the Ryder Cup following great seasons.

In June, McDowell won the US Open at Pebble Beach, becoming the first Irishman to accomplish the feat and the first European US Open winner since Tony Jacklin in 1970. He was also the first player from the UK to win a major championship since 1999, and the first Northern Irishman to win a major since Fred Daly won the 1947 Open Championship.

McIlroy recorded his first PGA Tour win in May — the Quail Hollow Championship — and became the first player since Tiger Woods to win a PGA Tour event prior to his 21st birthday.

He is one of five golfers in the European side making their debuts against America at Celtic Manor this October.

Englishman Luke Donald and Italian Edoardo Molinari were the other two wildcard picks.

Molinari (29) joins brother Francesco on the team.

The Molinaris, who won the World Cup together in China last year, will become the first siblings to play in the Ryder Cup since Bernard and Geoff Hunt in their 1963 defeat against the US.
