Detectives have arrested a 20-year-old woman over the murder of a man found in a Belfast alleyway.

The body of Stanley McAuley, 41, was discovered off Chamberlain Street, in the east of the city, early yesterday morning.

Believed to be from the area, it is thought he was seriously assaulted before his death.

Investigators arrested the woman in east Belfast yesterday evening. A 33-year-old man detained a short time after the killing remains in police custody.

Both are being questioned on suspicion of murder, police said.

Detectives are trying to establish a motive for the killing but do not believe it was sectarian.

They were alerted to the scene shortly after 1am and the victim was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

But he later died from his injuries and his family have been informed.

Detectives from the PSNI serious crime branch confirmed they have launched a murder investigation.

They are appealing for anyone who was in the Newtownards Road/Chamberlain Street area between 1am and 1.30am who noticed any suspicious activity to contact them.

East Belfast Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle said there could be "no justification" for the attack.

"I offer my thoughts and support to everyone affected by this tragedy," he said.
