Two held after shots fired in loyalist estate

Two men have been arrested after reports of shots being fired in a loyalist estate.

Armed PSNI officers were deployed to the Castlemara estate in Carrickfergus in a large security operation, while a police helicopter and spotter plane were seen in the area.

The police swooped on houses in Castlemara Drive and arrested two men on suspicion of firearms related offences.

A number of items were recovered including a gun and ammunition from the scene.

A local politician denied loyalist paramilitaries had been involved and blamed the activities on “criminal elements”.

The DUP’s David Hilditch said that the estate had moved on from its violent past and that he did not believe there was a paramilitary involvement in yesterday’s incident.

“I wouldn’t connect it with paramilitaries at this stage.”

“It’s probably more a criminal element to it,” Mr Hilditch added.
