Two remanded over armed raid at filling station

Two men accused of carrying out an armed robbery at a filling station in the Dungannon area on Saturday have been remanded in custody.

There was tight security around Enniskillen Courthouse for the appearance of 38-year-old Desmond John Joseph Hamill, from Springdale, Dungannon, and 47-year-old Austin Creggan, of Park View, Pomeroy, both in Co Tyrone.

They said nothing during their brief court appearance and remained seated in the dock, refusing to stand, as the clerk read the two charges. They are accused of robbing the Glen Service Station of cash and cheques to the value of £5,700.

They were also accused of having a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, namely a robbery, on January 14.

A detective constable involved in the investigation told the court he believed he could connect Hamill and Creggan with the charges.

There was no application for bail and the two men were remanded in custody to appear at Dungannon Magistrates Court on February 8.

As they were led away to the cells they gave the thumbs-up sign to the applause of around 10 supporters in the public gallery.

They were driven away in a police convoy.
